NAC ย่อมาจากคำว่า N-acetyl- cysteine เป็นแหล่งของกลูต้าไธโอน
Glutathione ประกอบด้วยกรดอะมิโน (หน่วยย่อยของโปรตีน) 3 ชนิด คือ cysteine , glycine และ glutamic acid เป็นสารต้านอนุมูลอิสระที่โดดเด่นใน cytoplasma ของเซลล์ เรียกได้ว่า แทบทุกเซลล์จะต้องมีกลูต้าไธโอนและถูกสังเคราะห์จาก 3 กรดอะมิโนในกระบวนการ 2 ขั้นตอน เริ่มด้วยการรวมตัวกันของ glutamic acid & cysteine สิ้นสุดด้วย glycine โดยตับและปอด มีหน้าที่หลักในการสังเคราะห์กลูต้าไธโอน หากร่างกายได้รับในปริมาณสูงจะยับยั้งการสร้างสีผิว แต่ไม่แนะนำให้กินกลูต้าไธโอนแบบเม็ด เพราะถูกน้ำย่อยในระบบทางเดินอาหารทำลายหมด ไม่เหลือให้ลำไส้เล็กดูดซึมให้ร่างกายนำไปใช้ ต้องอยู่ในรูปฉีดเข้าเส้นเลือดดำ เท่านั้น
